Handling Surge Capacity with Bii's Flexible Workforce

The aerospace industry continues to face ever-increasing pressures to reduce lead times and maintenance costs, while handling their customers' immediate service needs. For an FAA Repair Station like Bii, this results in increased demands from our customers to respond quickly to their needs. Scheduling, prioritization and surge capacity then become critical factors for customer satisfaction.

One way to address these increased demands is through the Flexible Workforce. There are many variations of the flexible workforce currently in practice. At Bii, the flexible workforce means cross-training and utilization of Lean principles. This cross training also allows for the handling surges in capacity, up to 3 times our current workload. The ability to handle these capability surges is of particular benefit to our military partners, where meeting the critical demands of war-time efforts are vitally important.

The utilization of Lean principles to address surge capacity comes in the form of Process Standardization and the implementation of One-Piece-Flow. By standardizing the bearing inspection and reconditioning processes, we are able to efficiently cross-train our workforce, ensuring that each individual is similarly trained. Through the implementation of one piece flow, we are then able to redirect resources to our bottlenecks without compromising the delivery of the customer's bearing.

When required by our customers, we are capable of increasing our capacity with little or no notice. In times of peak demand, we utilize overtime and redeploy our cross-trained inspectors on duplicate equipment. We also have the spatial capacity to increase our workload volumes by several times due to the size and layout of our facility. In times of lower demand, we maintain a static work force capable of responding to unplanned increases. Down-time is used for training and improvement activity. Never satisfied with the status quo, we continually seek a "better way", rewarding our workforce for their improvement oriented initiatives.

In short - Bii has the facilities, equipment, and the flexible workforce necessary to handle extremely high volume surges in bearing inspection and reconditioning workload.
